The skill of identifying problems and executing the best feasible solutions is known as problem solving. The six steps below can help you improve your problem solving skills.
Identify and Understand the Problem
Identifying a problem in any given setting can be difficult; identifying the source of a problem can be even more difficult. You must first determine why there is a problem. Once you've determined why the event or setting is problematic, you may be impartial by separating facts from feelings and beliefs. A nice approach to accomplish this is to write down the causes of the problem and check whether they are quantifiable. You may want to get feedback from a third party who is not engaged in the decision-making process at this point to ensure your objectivity. Finally, you should consider if the problem is solvable or whether it is even worth your attention.
Generate Possible Solutions
This is the stage when you want to bring thoughts together on how to tackle the problem. Making a list of the desired outcomes and coming up with innovative strategies to get there while addressing all or at least most of the people involved in the decision-making process is a wonderful approach to achieve this.
Evaluate the Outcome of Every Proposed Solution
During this step, you should identify your prospective options, as well as any compromises necessary for each feasible solution. This will make the process of choosing the most suitable option easier.
Choose the Most Favorable Solution by Prioritizing the Desired Outcome
After reviewing the different possibilities, you and/or your team will need to collaborate to agree on the most advantageous solution. Allowing all participants to share their views and ideas and then selecting the one on which the majority agree is an excellent strategy to do this.
Implement the Solution
Implementing the solution will be one of the most difficult components of problem solving since there is a high likelihood of resistance and reluctance from parties who will be affected but are not involved in the decision-making process. A smart method to reduce opposition when implementing a solution is to keep the problem well communicated throughout the process. This will get those who will be affected by the solution on board with working together to make the organization a better place.
Evaluate the Outcome
Finally, you should assess and quantify the effectiveness of the recommended solution. Did it resolve the issue? Could there have been a better way? Did the solution exacerbate the problem? The answers you receive will determine whether or not you must return to step one.
